Rona: In grandiose moments, high up
Narrative
After living a life on the outskirts of London, Rona tries to come to terms with her troubled past. In the hope of healing, she returns to the wild beauty of the Scottish Orkney Islands, where she grew up. This is the first time that Papa Westray has been filmed on Orkney. fresh air and freedom on a mountain, I study my own personal geology.
My body is a continent
I grind my teeth like tectonic plates in my sleep. And when I blink, the Sun flashes. My breath pushes clouds across the sky, and the waves roll in time to the shore with a beating heart. The headlands of the islands rise above the sea like my limbs in a bathtub.
Lightning strikes every time I sneeze
My freckles are famous landmarks and my tears, rivers. And when I orgasm, an earthquake occurs. One With the Wind was created by John Gürtler and Jan Miserre. It’s not often that I leave a movie theater feeling inspired by a movie.
The Outrun is one of those films
I’ve always been a proponent of the healing power of the natural world, and watching this beautiful, yet sometimes harrowing film reinforced my philosophy. Sometimes the best stories are simple, and this is one of them. Saoirse Ronan produces and stars as the main character, Ron, who was bought up in the Orkney Islands but, like many other young people from isolated communities, often yearns for the bright lights of London. The film does a great job of depicting the pitfalls of big-city living, but it also does its part by showing the Orkney Islands as a distinctly beautiful, yet sometimes desolate place.
I’m glad I did
I had also seen two big-budget films that same week, but The Outrun was the best of the three, despite only making a fraction of its budget. If you want to see a movie that will make you feel more positive about life, I recommend seeing this movie.
